Google Earth is free for personal use as long as you don't want the "deluxe version" (which can be brought on the Google web site). Google Earth is absolutely safe, it is from a worldwide company and there are no serious claims of it causing computer troubles.

Google also provides a professional/business-upgrade version called Google Earth Pro (or GE Pro) that provides advanced features. You can download the free trial-version of GE Pro and use for 7-days. After that you must pay an annual subscription fee ($399 USD) to continue using it but you can always use the free version.
Many people think if you get the paid version you get better imagery, but that is not the case since both GE Pro and free version use the same imagery database. GE Pro has some additional layers and other advanced features for the business user, but these may or may not be useful to a casual user.

Downloading executable software such as Google Earth from non-official web sites could potentially contain a virus or other malware. Only download such software directly from official sites.
