The Photography field is growing, in a sense.
There is more competition at the bottom, but less competition at the top.
This is due in part to the digital revolution, which has destroyed the chief barrier to entry-cost of equipment. Anyone with a little talent can purchase a DSLR and shoot a good picture.
However, master photographers are still few and far between-most people cannot take a DSLR and shoot a great picture. There is demand for these individuals.

Possibly by 'field' you mean a category or type, such as Photojournalism, or Portrait, or Wedding photography. Or maybe you refer to 'depth of field', which is the distance front to back in focus. Sorry to be vague, I have worked in photography for many years, and have never considered the idea of 'field' as such.
