Make sure the latch is open and did not get closed accidently (put the key in lock and turn it to the unlock position and see if lock assembly opens)

Been there. Grab the stering wheel with your left hand and yank it sharply to the left. That should unlock it, so you can turn the key. Once you have to do this, it is likely you will have to do it occasionally.
