Martin Luther was not a monk, he was an Augustinian Friar.

He was born 1483 in Eisleben, the part of the Holy Roman Empire. The family moved to Mansfeld. He attended school in Magdeberg in 1497 and then went to the University of Wurfurt.

He entered the Augstinian Friary at Erfurt after leaving law school. He believed that the Church was corrupt and a heresy case was drafted against Luther. The Pope warned Luther that he would be excommunicated unless he withdrew sentences from his writings. At his trial, Luther was declared an outlaw and his literature was banned. Luther continued his attacks but his health deteriorated and he suffered from a apoplectic stroke and died Feb 1546 age 62.

He is buried in the Castle Church of Wittenburg where he had taught theology.
