Defective ignition switch.
you may have a short in the ignition swith get test checked, a steering column specialist can do this in a couple of minutes
My boyfriend and I just did this in his Ford E150. You have to remove the steering wheel (several autopart stores rent steering wheel removers). From there you can see the ignition switch. The ignition switch cylinder is about 4 inches long, and projects into the steering column. All you have to do is press a small tab, then pull out the ignition switch. New ignition switches (with keys) are available at autopart stores. I suggest looking at a picture of the switch before attempting to find the tab yourself. BETTER ANSWER You do not have to remove steering wheel. on the bottom of the steering cover there will be three screw holes and a second smaller hole under the switch. with a pocket screw driver on similar device you can push the tab to release the switch.
the problem is when the baffles move from heat to ac and vent to defrost they either get stuck or the controllerr is bo. this system is built to fail safe in the defrost mode. Thus ac comes from Defrost vents. Apparently it is wide spred with Ford and Chev. As it is in my 2001 Ford F-350, My opinion To much Matel Toy company plastic and cheep parts we pay considerable money for from the dealers. 1) check your controller at the dash probably vacume 2) check the acutator at the butterfly flapper. Some vehicles are easier than others.....

If it has an air conditioning system, yes.
Either the neutral lockout switch, an electrical connection or the keyswitch. If it's a stickshift it could be the clutch pedal lockout switch.
It could Be a couple of things but first try changing your fuel and air filter. is it an automatic?
you do not say if your engine is gas or diesel. A gas engine has many sensors, any one of which could cause a problem, not to mention a borken catalitic converter, which could also have many causes. I have not found any reasons for a diesel to experience this problem. I think, that to correctly answer this question, you need to give a more detailed question.
