Mercator Projection : longitude and latitude as straight, parallel lines Conic Projection : a circular map made from a flattened cone, centered on a pole or other point Gall-Peters Projection : relocates standard parallels, narrows longitudinal spacing Robinson Projection : approximates a true spherical view of the Earth, except the poles Winkel Tripel Projection : an azimuth approximation of the world view, similar to Robinson The most widely used is the Mercator projection, the major disadvantage being its area expansions (areas closer to the poles appear larger and lack their true shapes). The Gall-Peters Projection provides a closer approximation of the relative areas. All flat representations of a spherical surface will create variances in "true" size or shape. (see image links)
To suggest that map projection of satellite imagery on to a GLOBE greatly distorts the images around the poles is a complete lie. Distortion at the poles when projecting a globe on to a flat map is known to cause distortion as the meridians are spaced much farther apart at the equator than at the poles. To claim the same applies to a globe is crazy. How would a satellite image around a ball cause distortion in one area vs another? Simple, it would not!
No - some of his pieces (especially some of the Nocturnes) have that trés espressif feel that is usually tied in with Impressionism, but he predates the real Impressionist period by a considerable distance, and this difference is further exaggerated because he died so young. He was definitely a precursor to it and influenced it greatly, but he himself was not Impressionist.
Cubism
anything that contrasts greatly from other artworks on the same image.
Yes, it is! Since the Mercator tends to spread the meridians apart near the poles, any landmass to the North (or South) will look disproportionally large, compared to landmasses nearer the equator. Just look at a globe. You will see how the meridians (lines of longitude)converge at the North pole. Look at a Mercator projection. You will see those lines spread out so they are the same spacing as nearer the equator. That's how the Mercator makes Greenland look so HUGE, compared to the US... -Bob
It's the location. 'A projection is a system for mapping the round Earth on a flat surface. The Mercator projection map shows the accurate locations of the continents and oceans. The land and water areas, however, are greatly distorted toward the North and South Poles.'
Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the first widely used flat world nautical map was the Mercator projection, by Gerardus Mercator in 1538, although the distances at the poles were greatly exaggerated (like making the continent of Greenland seem larger in area than Africa)

The famous quote "Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated" is often attributed to writer Mark Twain. It was published in response to a mistaken news report that he had died while he was traveling abroad.
