The answer to your question depends on what you mean by famous. During his lifetime, Leonardo da vinci worked for King Francis I of France, Pope Leo X, the Duke of Milan, and members of the Medici family of Italy. These were very powerful people during the late 15th and early 16 centuries, so da Vinci was certainly well known. Today, millions of people visit museums such as the Louvre in Paris and see da Vinci's painting "Mona Lisa." People all over the world know who Leonardo da Vinci is and recognize his works. Dan Brown's 2003 book The Da Vinci Code created a whole new wave of interest in Leonardo da Vinci and the possibility of his artworks containing codes and messages. Da Vinci is probably famous to more people in our day and age than he was during his, but he was definitely famous in his own right during his lifetime as well.

It is easy now to determine the large influence that Leonardo da Vinci has exerted on several of the different fields that interested him -- painting, drawing, anatomy, and even flying machines. If you want to read about da Vinci to become more familiar with his life, there are plenty of sources both online and in print. In 1997, the Museum of Science in Boston, Mass. hosted an exhibit entitled "Leonardo da Vinci: Scientist, Inventor, Artist." Their website still has the information about da Vinci available, and you can read his biography here:
