Then, since she was a woman, nobody would loan her money to finance her trips or help her build an aircraft. When she married George Putnam he took care of the financial side of her work, but if she hadn't married him, or if he had been unwilling she never could have accomplished her goals.

In her day, and in fact right up until the 1970s, women could not get loans. It was assumed that women would marry and get pregnant, and wouldn't pay off the loan. It was also an unwritten rule that married women quit work. The popular myth was that a working married woman was taking a job away from a man, and meant that she was selfish and unwilling to live on her husband's earnings.
