The precise quote that the above author is referring to is "Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen."

Apart from being an accomplished scientist and scholar, he was also a poet of (undeservedly small) reknown. He wrote a few sonnets and some blank verse, as was discovered from his notebooks. These can't be found on Google but your local library will probably be able to help you.
