Bauhaus CharacteristicsBauhaus characteristics include many different things, one include look for simplicity, Bauhaus design use simplicity of lines and shapes, look for straight lines or smooth gentle curves. there is repitition and many layers in the overall design, identical cylinders and towo or three corners which are offset to each other to create a simply but powerful effect to the Bauhaus picture/design.

another characteristic is look for materials that could be important to the design, not always are modern materials used in Bauhaus designs, it can be simple and smooth designs of plastic and chrome and other metals are used in Bauhaus designs.

probably the most important characteristic of Bauhaus is to understand the difference between fuctionalism of craftsmen and Bauhaus design is that mechanical aspects of a Bauhaus piece were not hand crafted pieces. these pieces had an industrial look, rather than a hand made look, they relfected their times by celebrating the growing power, significance and beauty of the machine.

The

BauhausMovement (1918-1933) was based on a German revival of a purer, honest design representation in architecture, art, typography and product design. Its philosophy celebrated an austere functionalism with little or no ornamentation.

The Bauhaus liberated construction from the excessive need for ornamentation as a means of expression, be it in art, typography, graphic design or architecture. One of the main objectives of the Bauhaus was to unify art, craft, and technology. It freed itself from the shackles of historical ‘styling’ and attempted to create a fresh order of primary principles.
