well sometimes when you try to start it it starts but shuts off again. sometimes it just doesnt do anything when you turn the key. i thought my ignition swith didnt work on my 98 prelude but i called Honda and told them the problem they told me that it could be just a relay next to the switch so i bought replaced the old one and it turns out that's what it was. you should try that first being that it only cost aroun 60 bucks and the iginition and swithch cost hundreds more.

Can a bad ignition switch keep the starter engaged?

Probably not a bad ignition switch, but more likely a bad starter solenoid. It takes a lot of current to get a starter to turn, to much to go through such a small switch like the ignition switch. The ignition switch actually controls a relay(solenoid) which can handle the needed current to get the starter going. On a lot of modern cars the solenoid is built into the starter unlike older cars and trucks where it was mounted on the firewall between the battery and the starter.

How do you replace the ignition switch on an older bronco?

How much 'older'? I have a '78 Bronco. Ignition switch has a bezel ring that secures the switch to the dash. Simply unscrew the ring from the front, then pull switch assembly from the rear of dash. Once it is free from dash there are plastic clips holding the assy together.

How do you know when the ignition switch gone bad?

Ignition switch going bad can be,hard starting, some things work while others don't and all your fuses look good. For example, not long ago a 1998 s-10 blazer would start, but the electric windows wouldn't work and the interior fan wouldn't blow. The mechanic replaced ignition switch to fix the problem, gas mileage went way up also. Also if you have to hold the ignition key in a certain position to make things work, its probably gone bad. Also any smoke or burnt smell around the steering column is a sure sign of problems. you.
