Moment Magnitude Scale. Large earthquakes are not measured very well by the Richter scale, especially if the seimometers used are very far away from anearthquakeepicenter. The moment magnitude scale is now most commonly usedfor medium to large earthquakes.
Magnitude - How big the earthquake was
Intensity - How the quake affected people and buildings in different areas
Tiltmeters use laser technology and GPS equipment to measure the slope of the ground level very accurately. If there is an abnormal, sudden tilt in the ground, there is a chance that an earthquake is on its way.
By looking at the rocks and the way the layers of rock are stacked scientist feel they have pretty good idea of the time and severity of many past earthquakes.

the scale used to measure the intensity of earthquakes
the Richter scale measures earthquakes...i learned that in science! we were learning about earthquakes. the moment magnitude scale also measures earthquakes but in a different way...that was a fun unit:D
I believe that scientists wanted a way to locate and measure earthquakes.
Scientists normally use something called the Richter scale to measure earthquakes. They measure in maginitude. 1 on the Richter scale would be small vibrations through the earthquake zone where as 10 would be total destruction. Hope that's helped!
No. The Richter scale is a way for scientists to describe how much energy was released by an earthquake (this is known as the earthquakes magnitude).

No, they are signs that there is water vapor in the air. Earthquakes cannot be accurately forecast because there are very few signs ahead of time. One way scientists predict earthquakes is by measuring how much the ground around a fault is moving - they have to use special instruments that can measure the slow movements, though.

Scientists have limited ways to predict earthquakes - ways that will always becoming improved, however the only way to stop earthquakes is to stabilize the rock deep beneath the earth's surface, a feat that will probably be attempted only in convenient circumstances for experimental purpose and with limited success.

I was confused about this too, I'm not quite sure but I think they measure the movement with GPS, they move about a centimeter per year. But the some people say that the motion is different and that you use a Seismometer, the same thing used to measure earthquakes.
by the way they look and act

Get many scientists' opinions of the data. Measure data in SI units. Carry out two or fewer trials. Record only the most significant observations.
