For years the greatest earthquake in the United States occurred in New Madrid, Missouri, in the early 1800s and created Reelfoot Lake. A large fault line exists in the North American Continent at that point splitting the Continent. The Ouchita Mountains were originally part of the Applichian Mountain Range, and the Texas Hill Country was originally part of the Piedmont Plateau. The Balcones Escarpment was originally part of the Eastern Fall Line.

The second greatest earthquake occurred in San Francisco in 1908 on the San Andreas Fault. The Pacific Plate is sliding under the North American Plate. That is part of the cause earthquakes in Along the Pacific Coast of North America and Asia.

Then one occurred in Alaska to beat both of them. A street in Anchorage fell 40 feet. Since far fewer people live in Alaska, fewer lives were lost. Still Alaska is the most earthquake prone state.

Where do eathquakes and volcanoes mostly occur in the US?

Earthquakes and volcanoes, although sometimes related are not always found in the same place. Although you will always see earthquakes associated with volcanoes, an earthquake can occur without any volcanic implications. Earthquakes are most commonly experienced along the west coast of the United States as well as along the southern part of the state of Alaska. Although this is the most common place to experience earthquakes, they can happen anywhere throughout the United States. Volcanoes are also most common along the west coast of the United States (with the exception of southern and central California) as well as the southern part of Alaska. The central and southern parts of California although the most prone to earthquakes do not at this time have a heavy concentration of active volcanoes. The earthquakes in this area are driven primarily by the San Andres and sister fault lines.
