The length of daylight in the day varies through the year as the Earth goes around the sun. Two times a year, except at the equator, the daylight length is 12 hours, so the daylight and night time are equal.

The tilt of the earth creates the equinoxes. In the summer, the sun arcs high in the sky, and the days are longer than the nights, In the winter, the opposite is true. One day in spring and one day in fall, the tilt of the axis is neither toward or away from the sun. The days and nights are the same length, and this is called an equinox.

Night and day are both equal (12 hours exactly). On the Vernal exuinox it is the first day of spring (March 20th) and on an Atumnal equinox its the frist day of fall
The sun is vertically overhead the Equator, this occurs twice per year, once with the northen hemisphere heading towards the sun, and once with it heading away from the sun.
