Nobody gets "bread and wine" in the Catholic Church. In a Latin rite church you receive Holy Communion when you are around 7 years of age, in the Eastern rites, usually when you are baptized as an infant. But, please, these are NOT "bread and wine", they only have the appearance of bread and wine, after consecration, they are the Body and Blood of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ - read the second half of the sixth chapter of St. John's Gospel (John 6:22-59).
Carnival occurs the Monday and Tuesday before ash Wednesday and is a cultural celebration including calypso music, costumes, dancing and food and drink. A festive parade is held the Monday of Carnival and limbo and stick fighting are also amongst the celebratory activities.
Belly dancing arose from various dancing styles which were performed in the Middle East and North Africa. One theory is that belly dance may have roots in the ancient Arab tribal religions as a dance to the goddess of fertility Some claim that in pre-Islamic Arabia Ishmeali Arab women were the first people to perform this type of dance as part of religious rites to Hubal, the moon god. A third theory is that belly dance was always danced as entertainment Some belly dance historians believe that the movements of dancing girls depicted in carvings from Pharaonic times are typical of belly dancing. As the term belly dance has come to refer to a wide variety of dance practices, predominantly performed by independent female dancers, it is very difficult for any single claim to be upheld.
To become an ordained minister in the AME Church, one must first be a regular and in good standing member of an AME Church for two years. If you feel a calling, you must then make your wishes known to the pastor of that charge. The pastor will then determine if you are pursuing the itinerant or local track. You must give a trial sermon at which point, the church will have a church conference in which to vote a person to be submitted as a potential licentiate. At the quarterly conference at that church, the Presiding Elder will then issue a preaching license, valid for a year. A candidate will be taken before the District Conference to be voted to be admitted into Annual Conference. It is only after these steps will you be allowed to go to the admission's class of the Board of Examiners (BOE). It takes five years to go through the BOE. If taking the itinerancy route, in three years after starting the BOE, you will be ordained a Deacon if you have a bachelor's degree. To be an itinerant Elder, you must have a Master's degree from an accredited seminary. To be a Local Deacon, you must have attended the BOE for three years. To be a Local Elder, you must complete all five years of the BOE. Deacons, both itinerant and local, can marry, bury, baptize, and assist with communion. Elders, both itinerant and local are the only ones that are able to consecrate the elements for communion and they perform the same rites as Deacons.
Bosch is often considered to be a "moralizing artist" and much of his artwork does seem to be making a statement about the grave danger of submitting oneself to a life ruled by sensual pleasures and decadence. However, the images depicting the sensuality are so vividly depicted, so full of color and life, that the painting has elicited many different reactions from its viewers. The painting had an immediate impact upon me and some time later I began to imagine musical textures that in some way gave voice to my strong reactions to Bosch's painting. My work, though influenced by the energy and dark intensity of Bosch's painting, does not attempt in any way to be a "musical analog" for this triptych. Rather, my reaction to the painting provided an impetus for the creation of the basic musical materials and formal structure of the composition. The music then began to take on a life of its own, moving in different directions than it would have were it a strictly programmatic work. In particular, I was not interested in making any kind of grand moral statement regarding the issues suggested in Bosch's painting. I did find, however, that certain compelling, visually striking images stayed with me and suggested an interesting visceral embodiment in sound.
