American scientist Edwin Herbert Land is best known for co-founding the Polaroid Corporation. He invented inexpensive filters for polarizing light, a practical system for in camera instant Photography, and the retinex theory of color vision. He developed dark adaptation goggles, target finders, the first passively guided smart bombs, and a special stereoscopic viewing system that revealed camoflaged enemy positions in aerial photography. He also designed the optics on the U-2 spy plane and discovered a two color system for projecting the entire color spectrum using only two colors of light. His Polavision instant movie system was a financial disaster and he resigned from his position as Chairman of Polaroid on Mar. 6, 1980.
Throughout his lifetime, Land patented some 444 inventions and innovations, putting him in the top 1% of all US inventors.
