George Washington, who was its only commander. When Lexington and Concord brought the start of the war in April, the militias of Massachusetts, joined by much of those of Connecticut and New Hampshire, formed themselves into an Army of Observation, keeping the British penned up and besieged inside Boston. The Massachusetts militia was under the command of General Artemas Ward, and New Hampshire and Connecticut also gave Ward command over their units at Boston. Ward was in overall command during the Battle of Bunker Hill. At the same time as Bunker Hill, in Philadelphia Congress had decided to adopt the army fighting the British, and to make crystal clear the point that the Revolution was continental in scope, involving all the colonies, appointed a Virginian to command the force for which it had now taken responsibility. Thus Washington was made commander of the Continental Army from the moment of its creation. Ward was one of the original four Major Generals appointed in the Continental Army, and as the senior among them, was second in command to Washington. The other Major Generals were Philip Schuyler, Charles Lee, and Israel Putnam.

The Continental Congress established the Continential Army on June 14, 1775 and commissioned George Washington Commander in Chief on June 15, 1775. Since he was born February 22, 1732, that would make him about 43 years old at the time of his being selected. NOTE: There is some historical disagreemet about the specific date General Washington accepted the appointment. Some historians claim that he did not officially accept until June 19, 1775.
