Other than painting, he was pretty much a scientist as well. If it would creep you out, he had to learn anatomy in order to paint, and to him, that meant asking people to dig up corpses for him to study the insides of people.

With an idea, he was an inventor. As millions of people in the world at that time thought, he always wanted to defy human logic. He tried to find ways to fly, generally, and came up with ideas like the aerial screw or what is today the helicopter. Even though his aviation-related inventions didn't go so well, his ideas helped the world create flying techniques with his blueprints.
