Insects use moonlight to navigate. As the moon is very far away it seems to be in a constant place in the sky all night. To stay on a straight course insects keep the moon at a fixed angle to their direction of flight.
However an artificial light is so close that when an insect mistakes it for the moon keeping it at a fixed angle to the direction of flight causes the insect's flight to become a spiral toward that light source instead of a straight line.
When they spiral into the light bulb's surface all that happens is they keep bouncing off it and are unable to figure out how to fly away. However before light bulbs when the major light sources were open flames (e.g. candles, campfires) an insect spiraling into into an artificial light flew into the flame itself and burned up suddenly in a brief flash of light.
