i am a Land Rover master tech, the first thing to do is make shure you have a good battery.test the fuel pressure and if there is no fuel pressure the fuel pump will take out the crank sensor leavig vehicle with no spark. so if you have good fuel pressure and no spark it sound like your crank sensor is bad.common problem. i hope i was able to help you.
Remove the spark plug wire from your 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. Remove the spark plug with a 5/8 deep well socket, white turning it to the left. Reverse the process to put in the new spark plug.
Check your fuses
if the car is chugging (petrol) it means the combustion is not happening, it would either be problem from the source of electric power to the spark plugs, or the spark plugs itself might be faulty, to diagnose them check if the battery is having good charge at least 11 volts, then check the condenser, point condensers, then spark pulg change whatever is necessary after diagnosing and you are ready to go
Check the coil or coil packs if equipped.
If you see a spark then something is on pulling power from the battery. If everything is turned off on the vehicle then you should not see any large spark. You will see a very tiny spark because the radio presets and the clock will be drawing a slight amount of power, but if the spark is very large then look for something that is pulling power. A light on somewhere or a stuck relay.
On a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis : Check the Vehicle Emission Control Information ( VECI ) decal in the front of the engine compartment , for the type of spark plug used and the spark plug gap
Check the ignition coil on the Marquis. Check the crank sensor as well. One of these is probably bad.
First check spark, if you have, then check the fuel pump for pressure.
