If you have 98 Oldsmobile aurora when you try to start the ignition the only thing happens is the panel lights come on the car does not make any sound could your passkey system be damage?
also your little display that shows messages and what not, that will say Clean Key - wait 3 min if the your passkey wasn't reading right Perhaps you see a Security Light flashing. Turn ignition on and leave on until security light stops flashing (up to 10 minutes) Do this a second time and again wait up to 10 minutes for security light to cease flashing finally a third time - after the 3rd time that the security light stops flashing ... You might have to bypass the security system or replace it. GM used the Passkey I, II and III security systems.....bypass kits for these can be found on Ebay and some other car websites.

The car won't start because of the security system. The security system will either have to be bypassed (there are kits available on Ebay sometimes and there are some websites that have them too) or replaced. The ignition key has a built in resistor that the security system checks when you try to start the car. If the security system doesn't recognize the resistance of the key it won't start the car. Then you have to wait 2 to 10 minutes before it will start ( sometimes it's a lot longer than 10 minutes). You could try getting a replacement key and see if the security system recognizes it better. GM installed security systems in their vehicles that are called Passkey I, II and III. So if you get a kit you have to know which system is in your vehicle.

Supposedly there are bypass modules....some are so that the remote start systems can function with the security system in the car....others are just strictly to bypass the security system intirely. I have seen some websites that sell these modules such as Ebay but there are some more specific car sites that sell them too. I have read a few things on this recently and it looks as though GM has used the Passkey I, II and III systems. The year, make and model of the car depends on what system was used and what type of bypass you will need.

96 Monte Carlos are equipped with GM PassKey 2 (the little chip you see in your key. Without that key, the car cannot be started. If someone tries to hot-wire the vehicle, not only will the computer not start the car but will also disable the starter and fuel injectors for thrre minutes before the car can be started again. To make a long answer short: Yes - this qualifies as an ignition immobilizer.
