I think Okonkwo was a noble man, and an archetype of the proud warrior. It is indeed saddening to see him suffer, but one cannot help but think that his suffering was caused by his own hands.

I feel if he had lived a more self-reflective life, he might have been able to not 'escape' the shadow of his father, but rather accept it. If he could realize by himself that he was a different man than his father, and that who his father was shouldn't affect him, then he might have had a better life.
