The ends of the bones in joints are keptseparated by cartilage. first of all the cartilage that separates the bones and gives them a smooth lubricated surface to work against is destroyed. After that the bones start to rub directly against each other. aside from wearing painfully and unnaturally, the body tries to repair the damaged bone. This leads to an even worse situation with the joints getting constantly harder to use.
