A CT or Cat scan is X-Ray Computed Tomography. A scanner takes a large number of two dimensional X-rays of a person rotating around the same axis. The images are then put together by the scanner's computer to make a three dimensional image.

CAT scans, or computerized axial tomography scans, are at the face of medical imaging procedures. The procedure typically involves being recumbent upon an examiner's table with specialized x-ray equipment designed to investigate the individual for any anomalies such as fractures, broken bones, hemorrhages, clots, and signs of Heart disease. Occasionally, contrast dye is utilized for better imaging. Fasting is usually a prerogative prior to any CAT scan. Metal objects, such as belts and jewelry, might interfere with the image results and so too should be removed. The patient also is prompted to wear a hospital gown and to remove part or all of his or her clothing items.

Is a cat scan safe?

Yeah, a cat scan is pretty much safe. I say 'pretty much' because the ionizing rays cat scans apply can cause DNA which can lead to cancer. Same as X-rays. However, this is very rare, and your doctor would only give you a cat scan/X-ray if he thought you really needed one. What I'm saying here is that, for all practical purposes, cat scans are safe.

Where would one go to have a CAT scan performed?

CAT (Computerised Axial Tomography) scans are performed in medical hospitals and clinics. A physician can refer a patient for a scan at an NHS hospital and this will be carried out at no cost. However if a patient is anxious to have a CAT scan done more quickly, or if his doctor will not refer him, the procedure can be carried out privately either at a private clinic or out of normal working hours at the NHS hospital. A private scan will cost in the region of £300 to £750 dependant upon the parts of the body being scanned.
