After the fall of the Roman Empire, knowledge of how to make concrete was lost and domes were not built until Brunelleschi built the dome of Florence Cathedral (The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore) from 1420 to1436.This was a massive feat because Brunelleschi worked out how to build a massive dome, one which was even bigger than that of the Pantheon. After that a dome was designed by Michelangelo for the St. Pater's Basilica. Many other churches were built with a dome. The Capitol also has a dome. The inspiration for this was Roman architecture
