Who is Thomas Girtin?

Thomas Girtin was an 18th century painter who greatly influenced watercolor painting. As a young boy, he apprenticed to Edward Dayes, an accomplished mapmaker watercolorist. Girtin's work advanced from coloring prints and architectural drawings to using watercolors as an art medium in its own right.Prior to Girtin's work, watercolor paint was used as merely a coloring agent, similar to the use of colored card stock today. Watercolors were considered background color agents for architectural drawings and map making. Having been thoroughly trained in both disciplines, Girtin advanced watercolors into a stand alone medium in it's own right, just as oil painting was its own medium.Thomas Girtin was an accomplished draftsman, as is evidenced by his early work, but he experimented with the watercolor pigments, gradually using the delicate washes to build extraordinary paintings that compared favorably to the oil paintings of the day. He is credited with inventing the Romantic style of painting in England, due to his experimentation with mixed media of watercolor, ink, and varnish.Girtin was only 27 when he died. His contemporary and friend, J.M.W. Turner, remarked that had Girtin lived, Turner would not have achieved his own considerable success.

Who created watercolors?

America's contribution to the international watercolor tradition is second to none. Although the British dominated that tradition in the past, American artists have produced a substantial and varied body of work in watercolor that is unmatched elsewhere in the world since the late eighteenth century. An unpredictable medium, the character of watercolor is uniquely challenging. The accomplished watercolorist learns to take advantage of the unexpected results of the medium. As practiced by most of its greatest masters, spontaneity is everything. The artist learns to improvise, which can be done effectively only with experience. The intimacy of the medium springs from the way it encourages improvisation and seems to record the artist's fleeting thought on paper. Watercolor, also known in French as aquarelle, is generally described as painting with water-soluble pigments on paper. Most commonly the pigments are suspended in a vehicle or binder of gum arabic. The classic painting technique was perfected in England during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The pigment was applied in a series of transparent washes that allowed light to be reflected from the surface of the paper through layers of color. This technique gives watercolor its unique glow. Washes are layered to increase density and transform color already laid down. With this method, the colors are mixed by the viewer's eye and create a unique visual characteristic.

Can I safely remove gouache from an acrylic painting without damaging the acrylics?

Yes. Acrylic dries impervious to water, and gouache remains water-soluble, so you should be able to dissolve the gouache with water without affecting the acrylic. However, if the gouache was applied before the acrylic was completely dry, there may have been some mixing or staining that is not reversible. Some pigments tend to stain the surface more than others (phthalo blues and greens for example). Test on a small area.
