Earth Day is a name used for an observance held annually in spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. It is intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment.

Earth Day, as it is known in the United States, is held on April 22 each year to promote awareness of environmental issues. The first Earth Day was in 1970. Created so there would be more awareness about the need to clean up the Earth, it raises awareness about the Earth's condition, and encourages people to reduce their pollutants and recycle more. The idea is to make this planet better for this generation and future generations. It also encourages everyone to participate in an attempt to make our global environment better.

Earth Hour is a separate observance which was begun in Sydney, Australia in 2007. At this time, everyone is supposed to turn off their lights for one hour. This is performed globally in order to get a full awareness and appreciation of the energy used and the importance of conservation, but it is a separate event from Earth Day.

Remember the 3 Rs: Reduce Reuse Recycle.
