>well i seem to think it would be the keyboard. <
I disagree entirely! In order for a new student to know the heft of the keys, for them to understand tone, and to have the chance at becoming a musician, rather than someone who noodles about on a keyboard, the child must have a piano.
Once a child knows how to play the piano, then playing any other instrument will be a lot easier.
It's like learning to drive - it's better to learn a manual gearbox than automatic. But that's another question...

ou don't get the full range of keys on a keyboard so in that sense you can't play a lot of Beethoven on a keyboard but if you want a lot of sounds with effects than a keyboard is better. Generally if you just want to play the piano in its original sound it is best to have a piano as the sound is better and there is a full range of keys.
The purpose of a weighted keyboard is to better simulate playing an actual piano. Skilled piano players can achieve variations in the sounds produced by striking the weighted keys of a piano with different intensity. Additionally, since playing a piano or keyboard involves the use of muscles in the hands and arms, a weighted keyboard helps condition these muscles to better provide the strength and endurance to play an actual piano.

The keyboard and piano are NOT the same, for a couple reasons: - The piano has a wider range. - It is more real and acoustic. - Better to practice on than a keyboard. If you are sending your child to piano lessons, it is best to buy a piano. A piano will teach them how to sit correctly, and how to actually press the notes far better than a keyboard will. And most keyboard keys are smaller than the piano's keys are, so that is not a good thing, if they want to practice right. Also, when your child reaches a higher level in piano, pieces will require more strength and power. If you happen to bang too much on the keyboard, the keys will break and the electronic sound will be damaged in time as well. However, a piano can take that kind of vigorous aggression. Hope this helped!
