I'm going to answer this question only on the basis of reading the book The Once and Future King by T.H.White.
The sword and the stone are very symbolic and there are probably a lot of different symbolisms, but this is a main one: the sword is the kingdom and the stone is might. Once Arthur becomes king he tries to change the mindset of his kingdom to right over might. This right vs might is a repetitive theme in The Once and Future King.
Excalibur was the sword which King Arthur pulled from the stone, and in pulling it from the stone, proving that he was Uther Pendragons son, securing his seat on the throne.
The man that is shown worthy of the sword shall be the rightful ownerThe words weren't on the stone. They were on the sword. "Whoso Pullet Out This Sword of This Stone and Anvil, is Rightwise King Born of All England."
According to the legend, Arthur was the son of King Uther Pendragon and proved this by pulling the sword from the stone when no one else could do it.

pulling the sword from the stone
The sword in the stone and Excalibur are 2 different things. Merlin put the sword in the stone in the stone( which by pulling it out made Arthur King Arthur), and Excalibur was the sword that came later after the sword in the stone broke. Excalibur came from the Lady in the Lake.
I'd say pulling the sword out of the stone certainly qualifies.

Yes it does! There used to be a little show going on near the sword in the stone where Merlin would choose a kid in the audience and the kid would pull it out! Sadly, the show is no longer done and nobody knows how the guy who played Merlin go the stone to pop out. If any cast members out there that knows how it's done please post it here!
