It sounds like you are talking about a time mark.....When I say time mark it measures an amount of time one has done in prison.....

The cross by itself represents a full one year stretch...The single line above it represents another year, and two more at the sides means three years...A lot of time it represents time given, not served. If it had a chain of single line dots around the wrist, the cross is usually on the top of the hand, it would mean that the person did a 'dove' or a twenty year sentence....
