HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a Photoshop feature that blends several digital images into one to create a final photo which has a tonal range that could not be achieved by ordinary picture taking. Where a scene has a large tonal range (deep shadow, bright highlights and often lots in between) a typical approach will usually result in image "noise " in the dark areas and/or highlights that are blown out. This is because the contrast ratio your eyes can deal with far surpasses the capability of film or digital cameras.

At least 3 (5 is better) exposures are taken so that there is detail in the shadow area in the first, bracketing upwards (increasing exposure) by 1 stop per successive shot, being careful not to blow out the highlights. The scene must be static (moving trees or waves are not suitable) and the camera held in the same position for each shot, thus a sturdy tripod is essential. A shutter release cable or shutter timer is advisable.

Learning to "see" as your camera and/or film sees is important to achieving more success in your Photography.

See the discussion page for another viewpoint, which IMHO is not 100% accurate.
