Melodrama Stage appearance and structure Because melodrama is such an over the top theatre it is best to leave the stage largely bare and with only a few key props that are to be used e.g. Chair, walking stick. The melodrama appropriate stage is made up of the foreground, middle ground and background. Foreground is used mostly where the actor on stage is speaking to the audience and using call and response. Middle ground is used for scenes when and actor is talking to another actor and background is used for suspense e.g. person in the background coming up behind someone in the middle ground, person gets a shock.
