When a picture is too dark it was underexposed, usually because it was too dark to take the picture. But, there can be other causes.
Something that projects an image onto a wall in a darkened room is a Camera Obscura. A thing that projects an image of the sun, rather than of stuff in general, is usually called a Heliograph.
Image is overexposed, and possibly blurry.
measures the perceived image degradation (typically, compared to an ideal or perfect image). Imaging systems may introduce some amounts of distortion or artifacts in the signal, so the quality assessment is an important problem.

1. Is it diagnostic? That is, does it answer the question that existed when the decision to take a radiograph was made? 2. Is the exposure adequate? Is it too light or too dark? 3. Is the anatomy present? Is it an image of what you wanted to look at? 4. Is the image distorted (elongated; foreshortened) enough to render it useless?
