It is used to replace some of the developed silver in a black and white photograph with an inert dye. This increased the archival quality of the print and could also be employed to increase the D-Max (maximum density) of the print. When used for those purposes, the toner chosen was usually Selenium on cool tone papers, as warm tone papers could produce brown to blue-black to purple tones, depending on the paper tone.

To achieve a brown tone somewhat like an old Daguerreotype, Sepia toner would be used. In the former case, print exposure often had to be curtailed slightly to prevent the toned print from becoming too dark, whereas brown toning usually required slightly more exposure in the initial print.

Why is iodine used in photography?

Almost any heavy metal can be used as a toner in photography, ... that being said, at one point or another iridium was used as a toner, producing a yellow image (much lighter than sepia) But since iridium is radioactive (only mildly- you would have to eat it or cover your skin with it to absorb more radiation than a day in the sun) there is no reason to use it except for the learning experience

Dying involves applying either oil based or water based dye with a very fine brush (for small areas) or cotton applicators for large areas of a print. What is your favorite type of photography?

Environmental portraiture is my favorite genre of photography. I enjoy photographing people in their homes, places of employment, and outdoor environments because context enhances personality. These pictures use composition, lighting, and subtle facial expressions to tell stories. Each portrait is made vivid, relatable, and emotionally complex by revealing authenticity and the relationship between the subject and the surroundings.

What type of technology is used for a Xerox machine?

Xerography, a form of photography using electrostatic toner transfer. A photoconductive drum is first electrostatically charged, then it is exposed to the light of the image which removes the electrostatic charge only in the illuminated areas, then the toner powder is applied to the drum and sticks to the areas that are still electrostatically charged, then the toner powder is transferred off the drum to a sheet of paper by another electrostatic charge. The paper carrying the toner powder then passes through an "oven" which melts the toner bonding it to the paper.
