sparta was founded by two men, one of whom was heracles and a friend. as sparta developed a government it kept two kings on the throne to represent the two founders. these royal blood lines were the argolids, the blood line of heracles and the second blood line was named after the son of heracles co-founder. that royal line was known as the eurypontids. next came the 28 elders. these men were picked for this honor for the rest of their lives. next came the five(5) ephors. these men were chosen once a year to serve for only one year, they could never be re-elected again. when it was a neccessity to debate a serius question, the first to discuss this were the two kings, after reaching an understanding with each other, they then joined with the 28 elders. once the kings and elders gathered , this group became known as the gerousia. after they had conferred with each other, the matter at hand, they then gave their advice, wisdom, and a path that they thought best. the ephors would then sit and consider this considerable sum of information. ironicaly it was the ephors who had the most power in the governing of sparta, if they agreed with the gerousia it was a go, if however they did not agree they would sit an discuss another course to follow.also, if a large engagement were to take place, one of the two kings led the battle, while the other occupied the throne of sparta. this type of government was not to be found anywhere else in all of ancient hellas !please do your self a favor. do not try to get precise historical facts fron the t.v. if you are a reader congratulatios, start with herodotus, thucidides, xenophon, diodorus and plutarch. these ancient sources should get you to the modern historians. stephenmccarthy21@Yahoo.com
