There are 2 ways.

  1. Richter scale. This is an objective method, and is a scale of 1-10, each 0.1 increase in size is a 10 fold increase in power. (it is only possible, even with a mega-thrust quake to reach 9 on the Richter scale). This is the most accurate and commonly used scale
  2. Mercalli Scale. This is a subjective scale, and the reading is based on the damage done by the earthquake. It is a scale of roman numerals between 1-14.

What is a seismogram and what is it used to find?

A seismogram is a graph that displays the ground motion recorded by a seismometer during an earthquake. Seismograms are used to determine important characteristics of the earthquake, such as its magnitude, depth, and location.

What is used to measure the strength of a earthquake?

The scale used to measure the strength of an earthquake is called the Richter scale

What is an earthquake's strength?

Depends on it's magnitude which can range. Seisometers are used to measure the Magnitude of an earthquake. Magnitude is it's strength.

What are the 2 scales used to determine the strength of an earthquake?

The Moment magnitude scale (which replaced the Richter scale) and the Modified Mercalli scale are used to determine the strength of an earthquake. The Moment magnitude scale is used by seismologists to rate the energy released by earthquakes. The Modified Mercalli scale is used to measure the intensity of an earthquake, and the amount of damage it causes. This value is derived from reports by witnesses of the earthquake, the damage caused to buildings and other infrastructure and the measured ground accelerations from seismometers. Please see the related questions for more information. One is the Richter scale, which measures waves and gives us a measure of the magnitude of the earthquake. The other is the Mercalli scale, which is based on the amount of damage done.

What type of wave can be used to determine the location of an earthquake focus?

Seismic waves can be used to determine the location of an earthquake focus. These waves are triggered by tectonic plates.
