What might cause a 1985 Toyota Camry 2L to be hard to start or hesitate only when cold?

I thought a full tank would help but after I filled the tank, the problem has WORSENED. Its very difficult to start it now as it knocks like crazy. The car idles smoothly sometimes esp. before engaging the drive gear, after that it simply stalls. If the filter is clogged then the car would not start at all. Right? Please suggest. Thanks. check to see if your fuel filter is clogged..also might need a fuel pump

Many things can cause this symptom. A little problem on this car is that corrosion builds up inside the distributor cap and on the rotor. Remove the bolts holding on the cap with an 8mm socket or screwdriver. If there are heavy deposits of white corrosion on the 4 spark plug contacts they can be scrapped clean with a knife or the cap simply replaced. If replacing the cap, be sure to remove the wires carefully by twisting them out. Of course any of the common problems such as old spark plugs or wires, clogged air filter, etc, can be a probem. The 1983 through 1985 camrys all have an auxiliary fuel injector called a cold start injector designed to make starting easier. It can become clogged and fail to operate, or the the sensor that activates it can fail. This injector is located above the fuel rail and goes directly into the intake manifold. Under normal running conditions the cold start injector gets no voltage. It is energized only when starting and the engine temp is well below 95 degrees F. There is also an auxialliary air valve designed to admit more air during starting and warmup. It is located at the left side of the engine where the heater hoses come out. I am trying to find out the same answer...I've replaced the battery and it didn't change anything. I took it to a local Auto Parts store where they tested the starter and said it was fine. I've noticed mine started during cold weather, but from time to time has the same problem whether hot or cold. I also just replaced the Power Steering pump. Good luck! I love my 94 Celica!!
