Different types of paints react to different types of plastics. Paints that incorporate 'hot' solvent bases can destroy and 'melt' plastics. Lacquer based paint is harmful to polystyrene, for instance, if the material isn't prepared before application. Knowing the type of plastic you intend to work with, along with the type of paint that is going to be applied, should result in quality workmanship and pleasure in a job well done. 1) Identify product(s) being used,if possible.

2) Clean and dry surfaces to be coated. Dishwashing liquid is non-invasive.

3) Before applying topcoat, prime(undercoat)the material with a quality primer paint, this protects the project from any harmful effects the paint could have and allows the topcoat to 'grab' the surface.

4) Have patience and allow paint to cure after application. Some types have a longer curing duration than others. See product label information.

5) A few light mist coats to achieve total coverage are preferable to a single heavy coat to avoid any blemishing effect that could occur.

6) Lightly sand, rinse, and completely dry project between coatings. You'll thank yourself in the end that you did. -Always have adequate ventilation when working with solvents of any kind, the stuff doesn't care and will hurt you.

-DON'T use lacquer based paint on top of enamel based paint. Lacquer,as aforementioned,is 'hot' and reacts badly over an undercoat of enamel. Like,if you intend to 'clear-coat' the project. The reverse is non-damaging, just let the paint cure before applying the next coat.

-I sincerely hope this information is helpful to you. Don't hesitate to seek additional information from other sources to assist yourself. Good Luck!

There are both spray and craft paints especially made for painting plastic which you can find at any craft store. You will also need to use a fine grit sandpaper lightly on the item, just enough to remove the shiny surface of the plastic in order to get the paint to adhere.

What paint can you use on a plastic sign?

If you are painting lettering directly to the plastic, there are single part epoxies that are available, some suitable for outdoor use, that would adhere to plastic without having to use a primer. If you are going to paint the background a solid color, you can use a special primer, formulated to adhere to plastic, then paint it with an acrylic paint which can then be coated with the same type of acrylic paint for any lettering and design.

Can you use acrylic paints on plastic?

You can use acrylic paint on plastic provided you prepare the surface first. Before you begin painting you will have to prime it with paint that is suitable for plastic, such as an enamel paint. Once you have finished painting with the acrylic paint, the project will need a top coat.

Can semigloss enamel paint be used on plastic?

mostly depends on the type of plastic and its surface if its flexible plastic, then the paint will split and crack when the plastic is flexed you can use a paint flexibilizer additive if you need to if the surface of the plastic is very smooth, the paint will not be able to stick to it. if its appropriate, lightly sand the surface to give it what painters call "tooth" it just roughs up the surface a little bit to the paint wont just slide off it when dry there any many types of plastics and some are very tricky to paint
