Overdrive might not work on a 1992 Dakota because there is a problem with the transmission. The shift solenoid or a belt is not functioning properly inside the transmission.

You can check your automatic transmission fluid in your 1992 Chevy Cavalier with the transmission dipstick. The dipstick will have marks that indicate whether it is full or low one quart.
That would be the 4L80E automatic transmission.
It has a 4L60E transmission, and that is the only one you can put back in it. BECAUSE of the computer / PCM. / POWER TRAIN CONTROLL MODULE
It has a model 700R4 transmission and a transfer case is bolted on the back to make it into a 4x4 transmission.

If it's a 1/2 ton it should have the 4L60E transmission in it. 3/4 tons have the 4L80E in them.
1992 Chevy 1500
It uses DEXTRON III automatic trans fluid.
Any 4L60E transmission, 1993 and up. The mechanical 4L60 and 700R4 from 1992 and earlier will not work.
If it's a 1/2 ton then it is a 4L60E, 3/4 ton will be a 4L80E trans.
