Southern reconstruction, Republican corruption, and economic hard times.
The Southern Democrats Supported Slavery & They Elected John Breckenridge As Their Democratic Presidential Candidate.
Southern Democrats are members of the U.S. Democratic Party who reside in the American South and they walked out of the first democrat convention in 1860 because they wanted to secede and there was much opposition!
Tough question. Provided that you are talking about people of the 19th Century: The Northern Republicans were fervent abolitionists and probably figured that the South had what was coming to them. They also preferred the idea of a railway connection to California from Chicago. The Southern Democrats would have preferred New Orleans to be the hub that connected the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Pacific. When it came to reconstruction, however, a confederate killed Lincoln, and he was replaced by Johnson, whose sympathy was with the South. The Reconstruction was pretty much put on a low burner under the Johnson administration, and greatly delayed and dismantled. Southern Democrats probably didn't care about the concept of Reconstruction, or really wanted it. They had already been through Armageddon, and had little to gain. Once the Northern carpet baggers left, they resumed control over the old south until the 1950's and 1960's. by Sakr, Kassem

In order for the Republican candidate to win, the Republicans agreed to end Reconstruction in 1877.
They were a political coalition in the southern us during the reconstruction era. They sought to remove the republican coalition of freedom, carpet baggers and scalawags.
They fought against expanding civil rights.
The conservative Southern Democrats were able to regroup and realign with the national Democratic Party while Republicans in the North were starting to lose interest in the South as they viewed the Civil War over and done. By 1877, southern Democrats had regained their seats in the House of Representatives.
As Chief Diplomat, Andrew Johnson had to negotiate between the different Republican factions (including the Radical Republics) and Democratic factions (split between Northern Democrats and Southern Democrats). The main issue was how Reconstruction of the Southern states should proceed and how former Confederates should be dealt with.
