The form of an object on a flat surface? As in the object's shape? If so, then you could use shadowing. Use a dark grade of the flat surface's colour or the darkest of grades available to your medium in order to add a shadow. Bear in mind the direction and intensity of your lighting and adjust accordingly.
Alternatively, you could put alternate textures into both the surface and object. Clashing textures such as smooth and gritty would work well. Or perhaps use cross-hatch and apply different directions regarding both varied textures.
You could use lighting. Apply a thin line of light or a lighter colour around one or two of the object's edges, just to trick the eye into thinking that it's a 3D item that's seperate to the surface.
Finally, you must understand and grasp that the item is 3D. If it's a chunky item, you can add different types of perspectives and angles just to suggest its boldness. Or, if it's, say, a piece of paper, you may just want to give it a simple outline. It's basic, but effective.
I hope that helped. If not, I apologise for my misunderstanding.
A collage is an art form using materials that can be glued, nailed, stapled, or sewn down to a surface to make an image.A relief collage is using this technique with three dimensional objects that form a relief surface.A collage is normally a flat surface with usually flat materials that form an image. A relief collage is a three dimensional image.
Shading is used to give objects a sense of form on a flat surface.

The Earth is a sphere, and true distances cannot be translated from a 3-dimensional form to a flat surface. Some maps are a form of the "gores" that can be cut from a globe to form a flat surface. But most use some form of projection that displays some aspects of the actual surface with some accuracy. The smaller the area of the map, the less the curvature, which reduces the errors introduced.
The term is called CLEAVAGE. It is a special form of Foliation in rock metamorphism.
