∙ 14y agoPrior to becoming the 8th U.S. President in 1837, Martin Van Buren was a lawyer and a politician. He served in the New York State Senate and also served as New York's Attorney General. Additionally, he served in the United States Senate. He was Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State from 1829 to 1831, and he served as Jackson's Vice President from 1833 to 1837.
