Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States. Before that he was vice president under Andrew Jackson and before that Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson.

He was a lawyer as a career but had spent most of his life actively engaged in politics and held a number of offices, including Senator from New York.

Prior to becoming the 8th U.S. President in 1837, Martin Van Buren was a lawyer and a politician. He served in the New York State Senate and also served as New York's Attorney General. Additionally, he served in the United States Senate. He was Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State from 1829 to 1831, and he served as Jackson's Vice President from 1833 to 1837.
