The building widely considered to be the first Skyscraper in the US would be the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, built in 1885. The building rose to the height 54.9 metres after the addition of an additional two floors, making it a fraction of the size of many modern skyscrapers, and it wasn't even the tallest structure in Chicago during it's existance, but due to it's architecture and structure it is still considering to have been the first. It was demolished in 1931 however, so you can only see it in old pictures now.
