Martin Luther King Jr. led people who demonstrated against the inequality of African Americans, and this often led to arrests of marchers on various charges, including disturbing the peace or illegal assembly.

King was arrested in several incidents. But because of his reputation, some officials avoided unwanted scrutiny by not arresting King himself.

In July 1962, his conviction in Albany, Georgia resulted in his fine being paid by the local police chief, so as not to promote unfavorable publicity about the mass arrests that included him. He was later arrested again and spent 2 weeks in jail under similar circumstances.
