Where is Durham Cathedral in relation to York?

Durham is roughly 60 miles north of York, straight up the A1 or, by rail, two main railway stops up the east coast main line (the one in between is Darlington, there are smaller stations in between at Thirsk, Northallerton and Ferryhill). The cathedral stands on a hill in a meander in the River Wear and is clearly visible as you approach the city, both by road and rail. It is one of the finest Medieval catherdrals in the world.

When did guildford get city status?

Guildford does not have official city status, as city status has never been granted by the crown. However, It has generally been mistakenly beleived that since the diocease of Guildford was created and cathedral built, that Guildford has had city status. The Football team Guildford United was renamed Guildford City at this time. The days when Catherdrals automatically madetown into cities are long gone and this tradition was started by Henry VIII, who granted city status to towns with new cathedrals. In recent times especially in the industrial revolution, many towns without cathedrals grew in size i.e. Birmingham, Southampton etc... It was then a choice whether to give these large towns city status, or give city status to smaller towns without catherdrals. This was where the Cathedral city tradition ended. This means that there are now cities without Cathedrals. Guildford was made the official "County Town" of Surrey by order of King Henry III. This title has been held ever since, even whilst Surrey County Hall is in Kingston-Upon-Thames.

Why choose a BTEC in Art and Design?

If anyone is looking for a course in Art and Design, BTEC Art and Design is the best choice for you.Last August, i got my GCSE Results and i didnt get the grades to stay on for A Levels at school so i then choose my second option, which was to do BTEC Art and Design. Ive always been interested with art and design and its something which ive wanted to learn more about and get a sucessful job out of it when im older. On this course, I would have to go to three different schools in a week which i really didnt want to do, i thought well i want to do art so just go for it. I did it and it was the best thing i have ever done.Btec Art and Design is only a one year course, which in a way is a bad thing because i wanted it to be a two year course because it was so good.I am (well was) a quiet girl and from doing the course it really made me more confident. I made lots of new friends and have made lots of lifetime friendships. The topics we look at on this course are:Drawing different designs in Liverpool. For example St Georges Hall images and the two catherdrals etc.Liverpool Musuems Research. For example, Sudley House, Walker Art Galary, World Musuem Liverpool etc.Research on LiverpoolSurrealism = R'ene Magritte research, an belgian surrealist artistLots of clay work. For example i made a mug :)Final pieces throughout the year include:Environmental issuesLiverpool and linking in with an arist, the artist i chose was HunderwasserLiverpool and linking in with an artist, the artist i chose was Keith HaringNative American designs and research on America on wood which would be put in the new Liverpool MusuemOverall, this course is great, i would recommend anyone to do it. As i said before "Just go for it" and it will be the best thing you will ever do.Hope i have made you think about this course a little bit more and if you do do it, good luck and i wish you every success.
