Racial segregation was the practice of the day in the southern states. Blacks were excluded from white schools, neighbourhoods, organizations, churches and restaurants. Blacks were supposed to sit in the back of public transport vehicles. Voting districts were manipulated to minimize the elective power of black voters. Blacks didn't get promotions (if they got jobs at all) Someone like Louis Armstrong could appear on the Ed Sullivan show but he couldn't go into a greasy spoon cafe a block from the tv studio.

All these things were rectified IN LAW but discrimination persisted in practice. Some communities are kept white because those selling their property simply won't accept offers from black buyers.
