Vincenzo Peruggia, the man who stole The Mona Lisa, was arrested on December 13, 1913, a day after he turned the painting over to art dealer Alfredo Geri and the Director of the Uffizi Gallery Giovanni Poggi. He was sent to Murate Prison where he remained without bail until his trial on June 4-5, 1914. Peruggia was given a sentence of one year and 15 days but his lawyers immediately appealed. The appeal hearing was held a month later on July 29. At the hearing, Peruggia's sentence was reduced to 7 months and he was immediately released.

When did the Mona Lisa get stolen?

Vincenzo Peruggia's motive for stealing the Mona Lisa from the Louvre was to return the painting to Italy because he hoped the Italian government would give him a reward. Peruggia wanted to return the painting to its native land because he believed that all the Italian art in the Louvre had been stolen by Napoleon -- including the Mona Lisa. Peruggia selected the Mona Lisa because she was small and easy to carry. Unfortunately for Peruggia, the Mona Lisa had not been stolen by Napoleon at all. It came to France with Leonardo da Vinci when he went there to work at the court of King Francis I. King Francis either purchased the Mona Lisa from da Vinci or from one of his heirs.
