Martin Luther never became a monk, he became a friar. On July 2, 1505 Martin Luther was almost hit by lightning during a thunder storm and was so terrified that he made a vow to become a monk. He joined an Augustinian Friary two weeks later on July 17.

Despite Luther's claim of being a monk, he was never a monk. When he was in school (college), he was riding a horse home one day in the summer of 1505, he would have been about 22 years old, and a bolt of lighting struck a tree very near him. He was frightened out of his mind, and he made a vow to St. Anna that he would become a monk if he lived through the storm.

He did live through the storm, and entered an Augustinian Friary, so he didn't become a monk, he became a Friar - a very different thing in the Catholic religious life, but then Martin Luther never did have a firm grasp of reality.

Never, Martin Luther became an Augustinian Friar on July 17, 1505. The confusion seems to arise from many protestant biographers who don't know the difference between a monk and a friar.
