The mayans used them and so did the Romans
With a few exceptions, the Roman aqueducts fell into disuse during the Middle Ages and decayed. Exception were the aqueducts of Almuñécar and Segovia. In the 16th century King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella undertook the first reconstruction of the aqueduct Segovia, in Spain. Thirty-six arches were rebuilt without changing the original work or style. Almuñécar, in Spain was supplied by five aqueducts. Four of them are still in use, not in the town, but in the rural area for irrigation. The Moors adapted them for this purpose. Another exception is the Aqua Virgo in Rome. It was repaired by Pope Adrian I in the 8th century. In 1453, Pope Nicholas V consecrated it following a complete restoration and extensive remodelling. More work was carried out in 1840 and 1936. It supplied water to most of the city centre until the mid-20th century. Because of soil pollution, it is no longer used for drinking water. Now it only supplies the monumental fountains of the city centre, including the Trevi fountain.
