Environmental portraiture is my favorite genre of photography. I enjoy photographing people in their homes, places of employment, and outdoor environments because context enhances personality. With the advent of digital photography more and more people are taking up the medium, either as a hobby or as a profession. Although many people have developed their photography skills through learning in the field or by teaching themselves from manuals and websites, one of the best ways to get a comprehensive understanding of the art is by attending class at a photography school.Most well established arts colleges and universities will have an affiliated photography school where students can participate in full or part time study of their preferred mediums. A career in photography can be an exciting and fulfilling vocation and although it can be a highly competitive business, with the right knowledge and skill set, it can be very rewarding. One of the most important courses that is often overlooked at photography school is the basic foundation course. This course teaches students the fundamentals of good photography such as aperture, how to use shutter speeds and composition. Other useful courses include classes on lighting, and how to license work. For students looking to pursue a career in the media industry, there are a number of courses that focus on the different facets of the media business including fashion photography, music and photojournalism. Other career paths photographers may take include advertising, architectural photography,portrait and wedding photography. For theses vocational choices there are several classes available that will benefit a student’s career choice in the future.
